Milton Glaser's symbol for aids is a beautiful example of design being universal, not personal. This incredibly simple design has the ability to speak to nearly everyone because it is built from existing symbols—the hearts symbolize love, while the skull symbolizes death. When these two ideas are configured they become an amazingly simple yet strong communicator.
